Skywest Airlines Environmental Policy
Fly Skywest and fly green - SkyGreen!
At Skywest Airlines, minimising the environmental impact of our air services and protecting the environment, is something we take very seriously.
With this goal in mind, we have introduced our own voluntary carbon offset program to allow Skywest customers to make their own financial contribution to offsetting the environmental impact of their flight.
As well as offering passengers this facility, Skywest is taking further steps to ensure that the skies over Western Australia remain green!
The Airline Industry and the Environment
It is worth emphasizing that despite the high profile of the airline industry, the share of greenhouse gases contributed are relatively small. The United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the foremost global authority on the issue, has confirmed that aviation contributes 2% of the world's CO2 emissions.
The IPCC forecasts that aviation's CO2 emissions could rise to 3% of the global figure by 2050. Consequently, the air transport industry is undertaking many activities to reduce its contribution to climate change as much as possible, many of which you will find out about in the Airline Industry website www.enviro.aero.
Skywest Airlines Fleet and Routes: How we compare
The sheer size of Western Australia means that travel by air is often the only practical way of traveling between Perth and our regions. Not only is air travel the most efficient and economic method of travel, we believe it is also the travel option that results in the lowest carbon emissions when compared to other forms of transport.
Skywest's current fleet is a mix of Fokker 50 turboprops and Fokker 100 jet aircraft. Both types of aircraft are recognised as being more fuel efficient than other aircraft in their class.
We are also currently developing a fleet renewal plan. By introducing more modern, fuel efficient aircraft and by operating these to best practice we will be able to further reduce the greenhouse gas emissions generated during our operations.
SkyGreen - Skywest's Voluntary Carbon Offset Program.
For passengers wishing to offset the impact of their flight on their environment, Skywest has introduced a new Carbon Offset program supported by Perth based Carbon Neutral ( an approved Carbon Offset Provider). This means any carbon offset credits you purchase with us will go towards tree planting projects undertaken in WA.
The voluntary offset contributions that you can make will include an estimate of the carbon emissions generated by your Skywest flight.
To calculate the emissions associated with aviation fuel consumption we have used our actual operational data and emissions factors sourced from the Department of Environment and Water Resources', Australian Greenhouse Office Factors and Methods Workbook: www.greenhouse.gov.au/workbook/index.html
